The New York Giants have their starting running back already in Saquon Barkley, but they may need someone to do his laundry. Ex-Cowboy, Rod Smith, seems to fit the bill.
Smith had a troublesome 2018 campaign, averaging just 2.9 yards-per-carry. However, he had a solid 2017 season averaging 4.2 yards-per-carry.
This signing is meant to find a solid depth piece for the Giants in case either Barkley goes down knock on wood or they are looking to give him a break at times. They currently have Wayne Gallman as the primary option behind Barkley, a player that showed decent abilities in two seasons but never made it to the starting level.

Last season, Smith played in all 16 games. This was the first time he accomplished that feat in his four-year career in the NFL. While his influence wasn’t impactful, he provided Ezekiel Elliott with time to rest and catch his breath. I anticipate a similar role with the Giants if he isn’t beaten out by Gallman.
