The essential attributes that make up a successful linebacker are instincts, recognition, and tackling ability. The New York Giants focused in on those priorities in the fifth-round of the 2019 NFL Draft when they selected defender, Ryan Connelly.
The Wisconsin linebacker wasn’t ranked anywhere near the top of the crop, while options like Devin White and Devin Bush left their mark as the top two linebackers in the draft class.
However, we shouldn’t sleep on Connelly, who ranked as a top-15 pass-rusher from his position, finishing ahead of Bush in overall grade in 2018, according to PFF.
“[NFL teams] like how fast I play downhill and how quickly I appear to recognize things,†Connelly said in an interview with Pro Football Focus. “So, I think that’s one of my strengths that most teams really like, that I can diagnose things quickly and react to the various plays that I see.â€
The Badger played in 52 games with 26 starts at inside linebacker over the course of his career, earning 251 tackles, 29 tackles for a loss, 6 sacks, two forced fumbles, and two interceptions. In addition to his football accolades, he also won multiple academic awards, portraying his intelligence and critical thinking ability.
Connelly was a walk-on at Wisconsin, and he plays like he’s fighting for his life on every play. His motor and determination to succeed are what makes him such an interesting player. He has solid short-area bust and the ability to recognize schemes and shoot gaps with confidence. He makes quick reads and is disciplined in cutbacks from opposing runners.
There’s no question that Ryan’s No. 1 strength is his burst from stand-still.
Check out how well he reads the plays shown and spots the ball-carrier through a crowd. While his physical attributes don’t stand out, he’s a playmaker that uses his intelligence and quick reactions to shine. I’m very curious to see how he translates at the next level.
