Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!

Head coach Pat Shurmur didn’t do us any favors in explaining the quarterback situation this week during OTAs. One one hand, Eli Manning is the starter, on the other, rookie passer Daniel Jones is expected to be ready to play for week 1 of the regular season.

Let’s not get it twisted, though, it’s Manning’s job to lose. The only way he can be replaced is if he gets injured or plays so poorly that Jones is forced into the starting spot. Shurmur’s comments might have been all over the place, but it only seems that way as he attempts to force competition at a position that Manning has had locked up for the past 15 years.

It will be interesting to see how the Giants’ veteran quarterback reacts to such competition — a dim flame begins to burn and is forcing him to increase his practice difficulty and training regimen.

However, Jones making throws in shorts and a t-shirt with no pressure isn’t enough to convince the coaching staff that he deserves to be the week 1 starter. The plan remains for him to sit quietly behind Eli and gather experience in preparation. The benefits will be great, especially if Jones is to take over in 2020.
