adam ottavino, mets

While all New York Mets fans eagerly wait on the official agreement with one key player, Carlos Correa, the team is getting other business finalized. They just made the re-signing of another important asset official.

It was first reported a week ago that the Mets had agreed to a contract with core right-handed relief pitcher, Adam Ottavino. The Mets just announced the signing a done deal.

Mets officially re-sign essential bullpen arm in Adam Ottavino:

One interesting point to make note of here. When the news first broke seven days ago, it was reported as a two-year contract (worth $14.5 million) between the Mets and Ottavino that included an opt-out after this year. As shown in the attached tweet above, the Mets are declaring it a one-year deal with a player option for 2024.

In correspondence with the Ottavino move official, the well-documented, crowded 40-man roster for the Mets needed to make some room. The Mets designated right-handed relief pitcher William Woods for assignment.

With Ottavino now back, the Mets have their second-best reliever from 2022, along with their best in Edwin Diaz, re-signed alongside some nice reinforcements. The Mets have actively pursued bullpen help all throughout the offseason. Whether it be the signing of David Robertson or the trade for Brooks Raley, the Mets have surely done their best to improve the biggest concern they had from last season.

A top four in the bullpen of Diaz, Robertson, Raley, and Ottavino gives the Mets a whole lot to be comfortable with. Perhaps, they could still add one more arm with some depth still on the free-agent market. If so, they fortify their relief pitching to an even greater extent.

With Ottavino specifically, he enjoyed a ton of success in 2022 with a 2.06 ERA. The Mets will need another big year from him.
