They say practice makes perfect, but at the NFL level, you need to be tested by elite talent to reach your potential. The New York Giants have lacked that upside at both receiver and cornerback over the past few years. However, they have two young players capable of becoming stars at either position, Malik Nabers and Deonte Banks.
Giants’ Young Stars Nabers and Banks Sharpen Skills Through Competition
The benefit of facing off against each other in everyday practice should be invaluable to their development and growth as professionals.
Last season, Banks was primarily going up against backup-caliber receivers during camp and practice, which led him to struggle against superior opposition. As a rookie, those growing pains were expected. He was overwhelmed by Davante Adams and CeeDee Lamb. To be fair, most corners can’t hang with two of the best receivers in football, but Banks has the competitive edge and athletic profile to become a tremendous player going into his second season.
Nabers as a Catalyst for Improvement
The benefit of facing Nabers every day should only fuel his success. The LSU product, only 20 years old, tallied 1,568 yards last season, including 14 touchdowns. His tape is elite, comprised of tremendous route-running abilities, great hands, and off-the-charts speed. There’s a reason the Giants utilized the 6th overall pick on Nabers, who they have under contract for five seasons, including his fifth-year option as a first-round pick.

Iron Sharpens Iron
Iron sharpens iron, so competing against each other will help prepare them for the grueling NFL season ahead. On day two of training camp on Thursday, the two players faced off in 1-on-1 drills, putting in some good work. Nabers won the day overall, but Banks will certainly have many opportunities to put together some positive moments this summer.
