New York Yankees: Is it a good idea to let Didi Gregorius walk?

The New York Yankees didn’t extend a qualifying offer to Didi Gregorius on November 4th which officially allowed him to walk into the free-agent market. Since then, he’s picked up looks from the Brewers and the Reds, and rightly so. Gregorius has one of the best skill sets of all Major League shortstops and it would be foolish of a team not to take a look at him.

However, for the Yankees, I think it’s time to move on. Emotionally, I understand that Yankee fans got attached to Gregorius since he was so big on social media and was a character in the clubhouse. Realistically, it’s important to remember that 22-year-old Gleyber Torres is the future shortstop of the franchise.

“I am just really proud of the continued strides that I see with him, from the time he got called up last year, was an impact player for us,” manager Aaron Boone said on his Torres. “His game in little subtle ways has improved as well, and those are some things we’ve challenged him on. I feel like he’s met every challenge and continues to become this more polished, well-rounded great player at such a young age.”

The New York Yankees could still find an agreement with Gregorius but it would probably only be for one year and very cheap, so this isn’t likely. The Yankees understand the talent they have with Torres and will most likely want to lock him up with a big contract.

I hate to see Gregorius in any other colors but pinstripes but this is probably the best decision. Torres is the future shortstop of the Yankees and the decision of letting Gregorius go was going to come sooner or later.
