The New York Mets are currently on a hot streak. The blue and orange are playing the best baseball they have all season and have won six straight games to climb to three games under .500 (34-37). Due to a weak National League, the Mets are sitting just one game back of the final wild-card spot.

Many of the Flushing Faithful are relating the club’s current success to the recent Grimace sighting at Citi Field, where the McDonald’s mascot threw out the first pitch in a game that would begin the Mets’ six-game winning streak.

However, rather than the appearance of a mascot from one of the world’s most famous fast food chains, the bats coming to life have been responsible for the Mets’ recent success, and one of the blue and orange’s hottest hitters just got named the National League Player of the Week.

J.D. Martinez is amidst one of the best stretches of his potential hall-of-fame career and, for the 12th time, has been named the player of the week.

Last week, Martinez had some signature moments, including smashing his first career walk-off home run to give the Mets a 3-2 win and the series victory over the Marlins. On Saturday, the 36-year-old had a two-home run game where, at one point, the designated hitter had gotten on base in 10 straight plate appearances.

Overall, Martinez went 9-for-20 (.450) with six extra-base hits ( three home runs and three doubles) and nine RBIs, along with six walks and a hit by pitch. The six-time all-star posted a stellar 1.050 slugging percentage and 1.643 OPS.

“What he was able to do was really special,” Pete Alonso said of Martinez on Sunday. “Not just driving pitches, but it’s the pitches that he doesn’t swing at, the tough pitchers’ pitches that he just takes… It was a clinic he put on this homestand.”

Martinez has been linked to trade rumors despite the Mets’ recent success, but as long as he continues to produce like this, the blue and orange will be sitting pretty.
