After splitting a four-game set at home with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the New York Mets headed to the nation’s capital to take on the Washington Nationals in a three-game series.
The Mets swept the Nationals in their latest three-game series
Game one was a back-and-forth offensive battle. Despite the Nationals sparking a rally in the bottom of the ninth that put the tying run on third base, Jake Diekman got Drew Millas to strike out, securing the 8-7 win.
Through three innings, game two appeared to be a pitchers duel before the blue and orange bats came to life courtesy of a two-run home run by Harrison Bader in the fourth and a two-RBI triple by Starling Marte in the fifth as the Mets would go on to win 6-3.
The bats stayed hot in game three as the blue and orange scored nine unanswered runs and cruised to a 9-1 victory and the series sweep. Here are three takeaways from the Mets sweep of the Washington Nationals.
Luis Torrens is making a case to be the backup catcher
After the Mets designated Omar Narváez for assignment, Tomás Nido seemed destined to take over as backup catcher.
Instead, Luis Torrens is making his case to be the backup to Francisco Álvarez. Torrens went 3-for-8 against the Nationals with two home runs and three RBIs while also playing stellar defense and throwing out a pair of runners against the team that steals the most in baseball.
If Torrens can continue to perform, president of baseball operations David Stearns will have a difficult decision to make once Álvarez is ready to return from the injured list.

Luis Severino continues to shine
The Mets have been without ace Kodai Senga for the entirety of the campaign, but the resurgence of Luis Severino has filled the void. Severino pitched eight strong innings against the Nationals, allowing seven hits and one run while striking out four. The 30-year-old is making a strong case to be the Mets all-star representative and has set himself up to get paid this offseason.
Jose Iglesias is making the most of his opportunity
After being out of the major leagues since 2022, Jose Iglesias has made the most of his return to the majors. Iglesias had a great series against the Nationals, starting every game at second base over Jeff McNeil while going 5-for-12 with a pair of RBIs and runs scored while also drawing a walk. With McNeil’s struggles, the Cuban native could continue to find his way into the lineup every day if he keeps shining when called upon.
