Earlier today, there were some conflicting reports regarding the status of New York Jets offensive coordinator, Mike LaFleur. Now, we have official confirmation.
In a bit of shocking news, the Jets have let LaFleur go. The young play-caller showed immense promise in the second half of the 2021 season, but 2022, for the most part, was disappointing.
Still, knowing Robert Saleh’s relationship with LaFleur and his brother, Matt, it seemed unlikely he would let him go. Perhaps, Joe Douglas or Woody Johnson got involved?
Either way, the Jets’ offense finished the year under LaFleur as the 25th-ranked unit, averaging 318.2 yards per game. They finished 29th in scoring, averaging just 17.4 points per game.
What hurt LaFleur’s status was the miserable end to the season. Over the final three games, the Jets’ offense did not score one touchdown, making it hard to bring him back.
- Unheralded Jets free-agent signing has quietly become one of the team’s best players in 2025
- Could the Jets run it back with Aaron Rodgers in 2025 amidst his recent resurgence?
- Jets reportedly linked to several unemployed general manager candidates
New York Jets make the right move letting Mike LaFleur go:
Many things went wrong under LaFleur’s leadership for the Jets’ offense this year. It starts with the lack of development Zach Wilson had in his second year.
From there, over LaFleur’s two-year tenure with the Jets, two second-round wide receivers in, Elijah Moore and Denzel Mims, saw their roles drop off, leading to trade requests.
LaFleur’s situational play-calling struggles in the red zone were well-documented.
Also, the Jets’ problems committing to the ground game was a constant theme throughout the season.
Now, the focus turns to who the next Jets offensive coordinator will be. It is just the first of many big decisions the Jets have ahead of them this offseason.
