Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!
Rebuilding an entire NFL team is not an easy task. In fact, it’s one of the hardest things to do as a general manager, and New York Giants’ Dave Gettleman is no exception. In his first two years overlooking the organization’s best interests, he has pieced together a team full of question marks.
The offensive line is shoddy, their future quarterback has shown promise, the wide receivers are inconsistent, the defensive line is trying to find an identity…the list goes on. Gettleman has performed well in some facets, though, for example, his draft picks have been far better than Jerry Reese’s.
He’s found gems like Darius Slayton and Ryan Connelly in the later rounds, injecting quality youth into positions of weakness. His free-agent signings have been lackluster for the most part, especially Nate Solder, Kareem Martin, Antoine Bethea, and Mike Remmers. Most of his signings were transitional pieces with a specific task at hand — to help develop the youngsters and create a positive atmosphere. That factor took a turn for the worse after Janoris Jenkins talked himself off the team last week.
New York Giants’ owner John Mara and Steve Tisch have a difficult decision to make this upcoming offseason: Should they fire Gettleman?
I don’t believe they will. If they fire Gettleman, they will have to accept a new GM coming in and completely starting over with a new coach and defensive coordinator. This would set the team back years and could turn the entire fan-base against them. Logically, the only solution is to find a scapegoat, which will either be James Bettcher or Pat Shurmur. I’m leaning towards Shurmur considering his lack of time management skills and personnel mistakes during live games, which would also lead to Bettcher getting the ax as well.
