The New York Giants have a crucial decision to make this offseason regarding the quarterback position. Daniel Jones is out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL, and while general manager Joe Schoen expects him to remain the starter when healthy, he also would not rule out drafting a potential replacement this offseason.
The Giants could draft a quarterback in the first round
Schoen was “asked directly” whether or not the team would draft a quarterback in the first round this offseason. He responded by saying that they would take “the best player available,” clearly insinuating that he would take a quarterback if it was the best prospect on the board.
Furthermore, Schoen made it clear that New York needs to add a quarterback this offseason due to the lack of players under contract. As things currently stand, Tyrod Taylor is an impending free agent and Jones will be on injured reserve for the entirety of the summer and potentially some of the regular season. That leaves Tommy DeVito as the lone healthy quarterback under contract for Big Blue.
Whether or not that quarterback that they add is a rookie remains to be seen, but Schoen said they need to add someone.
“There’s different avenues, whether that be free agency or the draft, but we’ll have to address it at some point.”
Giants GM Joe Schoen when asked if Daniel Jones would prevent the team from acquiring a quarterback this offseason
It is important to note that Schoen did not say Jones would prevent the team from drafting a quarterback in the first round. In the past, general managers across the league have definitively declared that they would not draft a quarterback in the first round due to the talent already present on their roster. Schoen, however, would not make such a declaration, leaving the door open for Big Blue to take a QB in April’s draft.

Could the Giants stick with Daniel Jones?
Despite indicating that a quarterback could be in the cards with the team’s first-round pick, Schoen also expressed confidence in Jones’ ability to still lead the team.
“I’ve seen it,” Schoen said about Jones. “You guys all saw last season. The guy won 10 games. He won a road playoff game for the Giants.”
Jones struggled this season, throwing for only 909 yards with two touchdowns to six interceptions in six starts with a 1-5 record. He also struggled to stay healthy, missing time with a neck injury before having his season ended by a torn ACL.
Despite this, Jones could still be the team’s starting quarterback next season as he will be entering the second year of a four-year, $160 million extension signed this past offseason.
Schoen and company have yet to make a decision on the future of the Giants’ quarterback position. But while that means the team could pass on drafting a new quarterback, it also means they are not certain Jones is going to remain the starter. It will be an interesting offseason for the Giants as they prepare for the 2024 NFL Draft.
