One Championship’s Eddie Alvarez to box Oscar De La Hoya?

Last week, Eddie Alvarez (30-8, 1 NC) made his third appearance under the One Championship banner. In the promotion’s debut on primetime US television, The Underground King took on Iuri Lapicus in the opening matchup.

Alvarez was looking to pickup a win that would set him up with a shot at the One lightweight championship. The Underground King has said that capturing a title in One would make him feel like the greatest lightweight of all time.

However, Alvarez is going to have to wait a little longer on that shot at the One title. Last week he was disqualified after landing several shots to the back of the head of his opponent.

Alvarez now has to sit on the sidelines and watch everything play out. One‘s lightweight champion, Christian Lee (14-3), defends his title tonight on TNT. After tonight’s fight, Lee is expected to take some time off as his wife is expecting a child.

With that, Alvarez might be on the shelf for a bit. However, he doesn’t plan on being inactive. The One lightweight is actually in ‘serious talks’ about a boxing matchup with boxing legend, Oscar De La Hoya.

One vs Boxing

Alvarez told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani that De La Hoya’s camp had reached out about boxing the One Championship lightweight. De La Hoya announced just a few weeks ago that he would be making his return to boxing.

Oscar De La Hoya hasn’t boxed in almost thirteen years and he is 48 years old. However, De La Hoya feels the competitive itch again and it looks like he has his eyes set on a potential matchup with an MMA fighter.

Alvarez isn’t some run of the mill fighter here. Were talking about a former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion. Had Alvarez won last week, he would be for sure challenging for the One lightweight title soon.

However, with no clarity on the One title situation and no timeline on his next bout, Alvarez is interested in the boxing matchup. Talks are still early, but according to the former MMA world champion, they are serious. This will definitely be something to watch over the coming weeks.

Sage Northcutt out of One Championship bout against Shinya Aoki

April was supposed to be a big month for One Championship as they looked to increase interest in the US market. Last week, the Singapore-Based MMA promotion held their first primetime event on TNT.

One had their two biggest US stars fighting in former UFC champions Demetrious Johnson and Eddie Alvarez. One had to be hoping for big performances out of the American stars, but the performances left much to be desired.

In the first round, Eddie Alvarez was disqualified due to shots to the back of the head of his opponent. Next up was the former UFC flyweight champion and all time great, Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson.

Johnson was looking to become the One flyweight champion. However, Adriano Moraes had different plans and ended up stopping Johnson in the second round. That was the first stoppage loss in the career of Mighty Mouse.

The next big event for One in the US featured MMA legend Shinya Aoki (46-9, 1 NC) and the popular American, Sage Northcutt (11-3). Sage Northcutt was the first fighter to ever get a UFC contract from Dana White’s Looking for a Fight.

Northcutt had an up and down UFC career before the promotion let him walk in free agency. Northcutt signed with One Championship and was knocked out, but his return was being hyped by the promotion to the American fans.

One Championship’s Rough Start

Today, we learned that the fight is off. ESPN was the first to report that Sage Northcutt is having to pull out of his upcoming bout against Shinya Aoki. Northcutt is having to pull out due to lingering issues from COVID-19.

With that, One is having to pivot and they have decided to leave Aoki on the card. Per ESPN’s Marc Raimondi, Aoki will now take on Eduard Folayang (22-10) on the April 28th card.

This matchup is actually a trilogy fight and both men hold a finish over the other. For having to scramble, this is actually a really good fight for One Championship to put on.

UFC Veteran John Lineker will be making his third appearance in One Championship against Stephen Loman on April 28th. Lineker is 2-0 in the promotion with a TKO in his last fight.

ONE on TNT 1 Preview: Demetrious Johnson – Adriano Moraes

Tonight, ONE Championship will officially make their debut on TNT. They have put their best foot forward with former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and former UFC flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson (30-3-1) on the card.

Johnson will be competing in the main event where he will try to capture the ONE flyweight championship. Standing in Mighty Mouse’s way tonight is the Brazilian champion, Adriano Moraes (18-3).

Moraes has been with ONE since 2013 and he’s gone 9-3 during that stretch. However, it’s worth noting that Moraes has already avenged two of those losses. The only loss he hasn’t was a split decision loss in his debut.

The ONE flyweight champion is very well rounded, but he’s known most for his grappling. He has nine submission victories to his name, but it will be his size that could be the biggest factor tonight.

Moraes is much bigger than Mighty Mouse and we’ve seen Demetrious Johnson struggle with taller fighters. It will be interesting to see how Mighty Mouse deals with Moraes at ONE on TNT 1.

Demetrious Johnson is one of of the best to ever do it. He reigned over the UFC’s flyweight division for six years before Henry Cejudo dethroned him. After that, Johnson was traded to ONE championship for Ben Askren and he’s gone 3-0 since.

ONE on TNT 1 Prediction

When it comes to ONE on TNT 1, there are a couple of things I’m watching out for tonight. The first thing is going to be the speed difference. Mighty Mouse is incredibly fast.

Moraes might be bigger, but if Johnson can use his speed to get in and out while mixing his striking with takedowns, he might be too much. On the flip side, I’m interested to see how Moraes uses his size advantage.

Will he be able to use his reach effectively? Is Moraes going to have an advantage on the ground? These are all questions that I’m looking forward to having answered at ONE on TNT 1.

Ultimately, I just think that Demetrious Johnson is the better fighter here. I love his speed and his technique and I think he can win this fight wherever it goes. I believe it’ll go the distance, but I like Mighty Mouse to pickup the ONE flyweight championship tonight.

Prediction: Demetrious Johnson by Unanimous Decision

ONE on TNT 1 Preview: Eddie Alvarez – Iuri Lapicus

Tomorrow night, ONE Championship will make their debut on TNT. The Singapore-based MMA organization is taking a monumental step forward in having their fights broadcasted on The Turner Network.

ONE is bringing forward a big time card tomorrow night for their debut on TNT. Their main event features one of the greatest to ever do it in Demetrious Johnson, but it’s the co-main event that might steal the headlines.

In the co-main event, former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (30-7, 1 NC) will taking on surging contender Iuri Lapicus (14-1). Lapicus suffered his first career loss in his last appearance with ONE back in October.

That night, Lapicus was stopped by Christian Lee. However, prior to that loss, the 25 year old prospect had won fourteen straight and he had finished every opponent. While he has 10 submissions, it’s his striking that could be the key at ONE on TNT 1.

Lapicus is going to have his hands full with The Underground King. Eddie Alvarez is seeking a lightweight title in ONE. Alvarez has been Bellator lightweight champion and the UFC lightweight champion. He said this week that a ONE lightweight title would make him the best ever.

It hasn’t been smooth sailing so far since Alvarez made the jump from the UFC to ONE. Alvarez was stopped in his first fight by Timofey Nastyukhin and then he won against Eduard Folayang in a fight that was an absolute war.

ONE on TNT 1 Prediction

Lapicus is a really tough matchup for Eddie Alvarez. However, Alvarez is one of the those fighters you should never count out. I remember not giving him a chance when he fought Rafael Dos Anjos and we all know how that turned out.

For Eddie Alvarez to win at ONE on TNT 1, he has to make this fight dirty. He needs to take Lapicus to the deep waters and try to break him. If this fight is flashy and clean, I’m not sure I like his chances.

Lapicus is going to have the technique advantage on the feet. With his submission threats, I’m not sure Alvarez is going to try to take this to the ground. However, I can see Alvarez using the clinch a lot at ONE on TNT 1.

I’m looking for Eddie Alvarez to use the clinch and some dirty boxing tomorrow. However, I’m not sure it’ll be enough. This is his first fight since August of 2019 and I really don’t like the matchup. I think he’s going to get clipped tomorrow and I believe Iuri Lapicus gets the biggest win of his career at ONE on TNT 1.

Prediction: Iuri Lapicus by TKO – Round 2

One Championship books Sage Northcutt – Shinya Aoki

It’s looking like the month of April could be an exciting month for One Championship. Early on in the month, Demetrious Johnson will be taking on Adriano Moraes for the One Championship flyweight title. That bout takes place on April 7th.

Today, we learned that there is another intriguing matchup that has been booked by One Championship. ESPN’s Ariel Helwani reported today that Sage Northcutt (11-3) will be taking on Shinya Aoki (46-9, 1 NC).

This matchup will take place in the lightweight division for One, however, it’s worth noting that lightweight is actually 170 pounds. So, for the traditional fans, the fight will take place at welterweight.

The fight will be just the second appearance in One Championship for Sage Northcutt. Northcutt rose to fame after being the first main fighter from Dana White’s Looking For a Fight to earn himself a UFC contract.

“Super” Sage Northcutt was only 19 years old when he earned himself that contract. The UFC was building him up as the next big thing, however, it just never panned out. While Northcutt had some highlights in the UFC, he never quite could get into that elite tier.

Following a three-fight win streak, the UFC decided not to renew Northcutt’s contract. Northcutt signed a deal with One Championship and made his debut back in 2019. He was knocked out by Cosmo Alexandre. Northcutt suffered multiple bone breaks in his face and hasn’t fought since.

One Championship’s Interesting Matchmaking

Standing across from Northcutt on April 28th will be an MMA legend in Shinya Aoki. Aoki is a legend when it comes to MMA in Asia. Outside of Pride, Aoki has held a world championship in every major organization.

He’s become a world champion in One Championship, Dream, and Shooto. Aoki is known his great ground game which he has shown off throughout his career. Out of his 46 professional victories, 29 of them have come via submission.

Currently, Aoki is riding a three-fight win streak in One Championship. He normally competes at 155 pounds, but he will be moving up to take this fight against Sage Northcutt. In all honesty, I really don’t know what to expect from this matchup. It’s fascinating on paper, but I’m not sure how this will go down.
