The New York Yankees have been anticipating the return of veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu, who has been sidelined while rehabilitating from a significant bruise to his right foot. Initially, LeMahieu attempted a rehab assignment a few weeks ago, but it was cut short after just one at-bat, leading him to take additional rest and recovery time.

LeMahieu’s Return to the Yankees

Fortunately, LeMahieu returned to the Yankees’ lineup on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels. Despite the team’s 4–3 loss, he made a notable impact, showcasing his classic contact-hitting skills. Although he didn’t record a hit, LeMahieu made solid contact in each of his at-bats, flying out to right, left, and center field. He also drew a walk in the fourth inning and scored on a Juan Soto single, following Soto’s 424-foot home run in the first inning.

Replacing Jon Berti—who is expected to miss six to eight weeks with a calf strain—LeMahieu assumed his role at third base with ease. Last season, DJ posted a batting line of .243/.327/.390 with 15 home runs and 44 RBIs, achieving a 101 wRC+. Notably, his performance improved dramatically after the mid-season coaching change from Dillon Lawson to Sean Casey, hitting .273/.377/.432 in the second half.

With James Rowson now serving as the primary hitting coach, the Yankees have focused on intelligent play, emphasizing both contact hitting and power. This approach has paid off, with the team ranking in the top ten in both batting average and home runs.

Having LeMahieu back in the lineup and positioned in the ninth slot offers the Yankees a strategic advantage. If he can recapture his top form, it will significantly bolster the team’s offensive capabilities as they continue their campaign.
