The New York Yankees were hit with another injury blow on Saturday evening, as manager Aaron Boone announced that Aroldis Chapman would head to the 15-day due to a ridiculous injury.
Chapman suffered a leg infection that stemms from a tattoo, according to Jack Curry of YES Network.
Yankees’ Aroldis Chapman has been eratic:
Chapman has had a polarizing 2022 season, currently hosting a 4.70 ERA, 4.86 xFIP, and 10.27 strikeouts per 9 over 30.2 innings pitched. He also features of 73.6% left on base rate and 33.8% ground ball rate. His strikeouts are down significantly from 15.50 in 2021, earning five less per nine innings.
- Yankees could turn to familiar face in reunion with relief arm
- Yankees cross $301 million tax threshold, indicating a potential salary dump trade
- Yankees overhauled one critical element in the outfield
Chapman has been a bit more efficient over the past few weeks, hosting a 3.68 ERA in the month of August. However, he’s given up three earned runs in his last two performances against the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays.
Chapman’s pitch efficiency has fallen off significantly this season. He’s relied heavily on his 4-seam fastball, slider, split-finger, and sinker.
The Yankees already have Clay Holmes, Albert Abreu, Miguel Castro, and now Chapman on the injured list. Boone will likely rely heavily on Ron Marinaccio, Wandy Peralta, and even Greg Weissert, who the team pulled up this past week to help smooth over the loss of Nestor Cortes.
The good news for the Yankees is that the majority of their injured players are expected to make a return in mid-September, meaning they will be available for the playoffs.
