Yankees call up reserve outfielder who requested trade for doubleheader

The New York Yankees will face off against the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday in a doubleheader after Friday night’s game was postponed due to inclement weather. The first of the two games will start at 12:10 PM. The Bombers made a last-second roster move to add an extra player to help supplement fatigue during a long day.

Yankees called on Miguel Andujar, who was recently sent back down to Triple after a solid 12-game performance with the Yankees, while Giancarlo Stanton was on the injured list.

Andujar recorded a .268 average with a 28% on-base rate and three RBIs over 43 plate appearances. However, when he was sent back down to Scranton, he immediately requested a trade from the front office. He’s looking for an opportunity with a big-league team.

Per the Yankees:

Prior to today’s doubleheader, the Yankees appointed INF/OF Miguel Andújar (#41) as their “27th Man”.

“Miggy’s a great guy,” Boone told reporters after Andujar was sent back down several weeks ago. “That’s a difficult option, understanding that he’s a big part of what we’ve done here, and certainly wants to be here. So I understand that’s a tough one. … He had been playing regularly for us. He’s been part of us winning ballgames.”

In Triple-A this season, Miggy is hitting .316 with a 36% on-base rate, seven homers and 27 RBIs. He’s only striking out at a 13% rate, indicating phenomenal offensive capabilities. He has a 125 wRC+, showing he’s 25% better than the average Triple-A player.

Defensively, Andujar has gained plenty of experience in left field, spending 205 innings there with Scranton this season. At the MLB level, he has a perfect fielding percentage over 88 innings, including 22 putouts.

While Andujar is simply a pick-up for the doubleheader, I imagine he will be sent right back down to Scranton once Saturday is over. Hopefully, the Yankees can find a better home for him where he can extrapolate on his strengths at the major league level.
