New York Yankees: Luke Voit is Eyeing Return Date

New York Yankees’  slugger Luke Voit has missed the past few weeks due to a sports hernia. Friday night, Voit played six innings and hit leadoff for the triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders to begin his rehab assignment. He went 0-3 with a walk and a run scored in the game. These rehab assignments aren’t about performance but mostly about making sure he’s feeling back to 100%.

Manager Aaron Boone said that Voit could be activated from the injured list next Friday. Boone said, “The way we have it mapped out, there is a chance he could join us that Friday when we start the homestand.”

Railriders coach Jay Bell said, “Luke said that he felt great, and he looked really good.” Bell continued, ” (Voit) just needs to work on his timing.”

It’s a big positive that Voit was able to complete his six-inning game with no concerns. There were no signs of discomfort when Voit was running the bases or swinging. Defensively, the Railriders have been working him out consistently where Bell added, “the workdays that we’ve had so far, he’s been into his legs really nicely and so it’s been pretty positive.”

Voit is intended to DH Saturday night, and play the whole game Sunday night. He’ll then have an off day Monday, and continue playing late into the week. The New York Yankees hope that Voit will return late next week or next weekend when they take on the Oakland Athletics.

Voit is currently batting .278 with 19 home runs and 54 runs batted in (Baseball-Reference). He’s been a predominant force in the Yankee lineup this season.
