A few days after he learned that his injury would take between two and three weeks to fully heal, New York Yankees‘ shortstop Gleyber Torres is already on the comeback trail and he said to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com that he was surprised that the MRI showed strains on both his left quadriceps and hamstring.

He suffered the injury while running to first base last week. The good news is that the Yankees’ prized young asset has already started to perform light baseball activities, which bodes well for his chances to beat the established timeline and make a full recovery.

The infielder himself said that he jogged around the outfield at half-speed on Sunday, which is an encouraging sign, three days after suffering the injury last Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

“I felt something, but I didn’t think it was too dangerous,” Torres said. “It felt like tightness. After the MRI showed everything, I felt bad, because I don’t want to be on the injured list. I just want to compete with my teammates. I’ll just try to get rest, try to recover really well and try to get back to the field as soon as possible.”

The Yankees’ plan to replace him

New York Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone said over the weekend that with Torres on the shelf, he expects to use Tyler Wade and Thairo Estrada at shortstop. Per Hoch, the club could also promote an infielder or two, as they have Matt Duffy, Kyle Holder and Jordy Mercer to choose from.

For now, Gleyber is also performing some work in the weight room and reported no pain. He expects to resume swinging a bat this week.

“The players prepared really well during the quarantine; myself, I prepared really well,” Torres said. “I think injuries just happen. Right now, it’s time to prepare myself a little bit better, try to get a little bit stronger in my lower half and just ready to play a game.”
