The New York Yankees are preparing to make a few significant changes to their defense, including the transitioning of Gleyber Torres to the shortstop position.
In 2019, Torres filled in for Didi Gregorius while he recovered from Tommy John surgery, and he struggled defensively at times, posting a .961 fielding percentage compared to his .967 percentage at second base. Making the move will undoubtedly take a bit of time regarding adaptation, but Torres is no alien to the shortstop position. In fact, his primary spot landed there as a youngster, so he’s familiar with the difficulties and duties it requires.
On Tuesday night, Torres stated:
“I heard too many things like, I have to be better defensively,†the Yankees star said Tuesday night. “So, I’m just working very hard this offseason.â€
New York Yankees’ Gleyber Torres will be ready:
The Venezuelan native initiated his workouts a month early before spring training as a precautionary measure in the wake of the switch. However, Torres is not backing down from the challenge, as he’s prepared to reclaim his natural position on the team.
“We know Didi did a really good job,†Torres said. “But now the team gives me an opportunity to play my position and during the offseason I prepared very well, trying to get better and to be better and help my team.
He added, “I’m excited. I’m really comfortable at second base, too. I learned a lot about that position. But like I said, I’m back to my position, I feel a little more comfortable. It’s very simple. I don’t feel pressure or anything. I just want to play my game and try to win games.â€
The upcoming season represents many changes, including the return of Miguel Andujar and Giancarlo to the team after sustaining significant injuries. Factor in the signing of Gerrit Cole and the Yankees are in an excellent position to reach their first World Series in over a decade.
