Good news and bad news for the Yankees after double-header defeat:
With Luis Gil and Chad Green both requiring UCL surgery, the Yankees will be relying heavily on their offense to pick up the slack.
Nonetheless, the offense curated just three hits, one of them coming against Kopech, who lasted 7.0 innings. In Kopech’s last outing against the Yankees, he gave up three earned runs over 6.0 innings, but he was accurately throwing his fastball at upwards of 98 mph on Sunday evening. His master-class performance forced the Yankees to lean on their starting pitcher, Luis Severino.
Severino worked his way out of trouble on a number of occasions, including a bases-loaded situation in the 5th inning. Severino showed resiliency, but the bullpen was unable to get the job done afterward.
Jonathan Loáisiga gave up four earned runs in less than an inning, elevating his ERA to 7.02. In relief, Miguel Castro gave up a three-run homer to Tim Anderson, with most of the runs being attributed to Loáisiga.
Unfortunately, the Yankee sluggers were incredibly quiet, with Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton combining for four strikeouts. Only Judge, Marwin Gonzalez, and Rob Brantly produced hits on the evening.
At some point, the Yanks were going to struggle both offensively and with their pitching. Unfortunately, it all happened on the same day as a doubleheader. Luckily, they are preparing to host the Baltimore Orioles in a three-game series. This should provide them a chance to bounce back against one of the league’s worst teams.
The Yankees still have a five-game cushion in the AL East above the Tampa Bay Rays and 1.5 games on the Los Angeles Dodgers in all of baseball. However, they are preparing to face several difficult challenges. We will get to see how well they can overcome adversity.
