New York Rangers General Manager Chris Drury is taking decisive steps to free up salary space for the offseason, indicating a focused strategy to strengthen the team’s roster for a run at the Stanley Cup.
In a move reflecting Drury’s commitment to reshaping the team, veteran Barclay Goodrow was waived—a decision that underscores the Rangers’ determination to pursue quality enhancements. After their playoff journey ended prematurely in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Florida Panthers, Drury’s actions suggest he is preparing for significant changes.
According to Vince Z. Mercogliano of Lohud, key players, including Kaapo Kakko and Jacob Trouba, might be traded to facilitate these enhancements:
“…belief around the league is that both forward Kaapo Kakko and defenseman Jacob Trouba are available in the right deal. Restricted free agent Ryan Lindgren could fall into that category, as well.”
Kaapo Kakko, the 23-year-old former first-round pick of the Rangers in 2019, has not lived up to expectations. Over the past season, he played 61 games, scoring 13 goals and six assists for a total of 19 points.
Despite his potential, Kakko has struggled to deliver consistently, with his best season in 2022–23 producing only 40 points. Recently signing a one-year, $2.4 million deal on June 13, Kakko’s future with the Rangers remains uncertain, though his youth and potential could attract interest from other teams.
Jacob Trouba, the 31-year-old team captain, managed only three goals and 19 assists this past season, recording a -4 plus/minus rating. While Trouba has been recognized for his leadership, winning the Messier Leadership Award, his hefty contract is increasingly difficult to justify given his limited production, particularly in the postseason.
Signed to a seven-year, $56 million deal in 2019, Trouba’s $8 million annual salary over the next two years might be reallocated as the Rangers look to enhance their offensive capabilities or invest in another defensive asset.
Ryan Lindgren, 26, is another player who might be traded. Last season, he contributed three goals and 14 assists with a +22 rating. While he has proven to be a reliable defenseman, the possibility of trading Lindgren indicates Drury’s readiness to make significant roster changes.
As Drury maneuvers through these potential trades, it is clear that the Rangers are poised to undergo substantial transformations in their quest to build a team capable of contending for the Stanley Cup.
