The New York Rangers have begun making their preparations for the upcoming free agency period. To get themselves in a healthy spot to add talent, the Rangers made a cap-saving move on Tuesday afternoon, reportedly placing veteran forward Barclay Goodrow on waivers.
Whether Goodrow goes claimed or unclaimed on waivers, the Rangers will save some cap space, per Mollie Walker of The New York Post. The 31-year-old has a $3.6 million cap hit for the next three years on his contract.
However, according to Vince Mercogliano of Lohud, if another team claims Goodrow on waivers, New York would save the full $3.642 million cap hit. But if they end up buying him out, their savings would actually be more next season ($3.89 million), but it would come with lingering salary cap penalties for the next five years.
Goodrow is now available for teams around the NHL to acquire his services. In 2023, Goodrow played in 80 games for the Blueshirts, totaling 12 points (four goals and eight assists) with a career-worst -13 rating. It seemed as though the game had passed him by at times during the regular season, however, Goodrow appeared to turn things around during the playoffs.
It initially seemed as though Goodrow had saved himself from a potential buyout with his postseason performances, however, now it appears as though the Rangers are ready to move on from the veteran forward.
