After having their seven-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday, the New York Mets bounced back yesterday afternoon. They defeated the Washington Nationals 9-5, taking the series. The Mets are now 66-38 on the year and back up to 3.5 games over the Atlanta Braves as the two teams enter a huge five-game series at Citi Field.
Two big home runs help lead the Mets:
The Mets scored six of their runs on two home runs from their biggest power hitters in yesterday’s game. All-Star Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer in the third inning. He now has 28 home runs and 88 RBIs on the year. Alonso is fifth in homers and second in runs batted in. In the fifth inning, Daniel Vogelbach hit a huge grand slam to put the Mets up 6-0. The home run was Vogelbach’s 13th of 2022.
A key takeaway from this game is that Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil both had three-hit games. Nimmo also got on base a fourth time with a walk. The two have picked it up lately and are crucial to the Mets’ success down the stretch. McNeil is now batting .302 and Nimmo .272.
The final three runs in this game were driven in by Starling Marte, Luis Guillorme, and Tomas Nido. They all had one hit in this one. Tyler Naquin pinch-hit and got a double for the Mets as well.
Lastly, with the batting order, Francisco Lindor now has a nine-game hitting streak. He continues to thrive. Lindor is now batting .262. He also got on base with a walk and scored a run yesterday. Over his last 22 games, Lindor is batting .337 with six home runs and 17 RBIs.

Seven scoreless from Chris Bassitt:
Chris Bassitt gave the Mets an awesome outing in the series finale. Over seven innings, he threw just 94 pitches. He allowed just six hits and gave up one walk. Bassitt had four strikeouts. After this terrific start, Bassitt is now 8-7 with a 3.61 ERA on the year.
In his first game back, Trevor May gave the Mets a scoreless inning with one hit and a strikeout on 16 pitches. In his Mets debut, Mychal Givens struggled to say the least. To start the ninth, Givens got just two outs and threw 24 pitches. He gave up five hits, two of which were homers, and five earned runs. Seth Lugo had to be brought in to get the final out and seal the win for the Mets.
Huge five-game series with the Braves:
The Mets now enter a pivotal five-game series with the Braves. It could have a huge impact on who ends up winning the division. The Mets will need continued success from their bats and starters. The bullpen is going to have to prove themselves and be more reliable in this big series at home.
