More speculation on the upcoming free agency for New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom was recently sparked by a teammate.

Following comments made by two past teammates of deGrom from the starting rotation last week, Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard, a 2022 teammate in Mark Canha spoke.

Before going over Canha’s comments, it is worth noting that both Wheeler and Syndergaard said they feel deGrom will remain a Met. Wheeler provided some appealing insight going so far as to say that deGrom is indeed “happy” with the Mets.

Mark Canha talks about Jacob deGrom, future with New York Mets:

When it comes to how deGrom feels about the Mets, what his rapport is like with his teammates, and what Canha himself hopes will happen, he had this to say.

“Jake told me he wants to come back, too, and he really likes it here, too. I think Jake and Max (Scherzer) and Chris (Bassitt) have a really good friendship they have developed over this year and good professional relationship, too. I’m hopeful for Jake, but (Edwin) Diaz and (Brandon) Nimmo, I have no idea where they’re at.”

It is encouraging to hear from now three teammates of deGrom that he is delighted being a Met and would like to stay. If so, the Mets will have the money available to pay up and keep deGrom a Met for his entire career.

Lastly, one teammate mentioned above also set for free agency, Chris Bassitt, is someone Canha knows well. The two both spent years with the Oakland Athletics together before joining the Mets last year. On Bassitt’s upcoming free agency, Canha said, “I think Bassitt will be back.” If the Mets can find a way to re-sign both deGrom and Bassitt, to keep the top of this elite rotation in tact with Scherzer, they position themselves well to take a step next year.
