Following the conclusion of the 2022 World Series, New York Mets general manager Billy Eppler is in Las Vegas at the annual GM meetings.

Eppler met with the media yesterday and was asked about multiple impending Mets free agents. He shared some insight on where things stand with a few key Mets set to hit the market.

Communication with Jacob deGrom has been there:

When asked on how beginning discussions have been with ace Jacob deGrom, Eppler stated this.

“Friendly, cordial, professional. All of those. Just transparent. Talking about being with each other in every step of the way, through this. That’s it.”

This does follow up with what some recent reports from sources have indicated that the Mets and deGrom have remained in “preliminary contact.”

On whether deGrom would like to stay with the Mets, Eppler shared the following.

“I think there’s a good deal of interest there, on his part. That was articulated a number of times through the season and reiterated in our most recent conversation.”

Brandon Nimmo “knows how” the Mets feel:

With Edwin Diaz already signed, along with deGrom, Brandon Nimmo is the Mets’ other top free agent. On Nimmo’s upcoming free agency, Eppler had this to say.

“Brandon, kind of just like Jake, knows how we feel about him. But again, he’s reached a point in his contract where he’s afforded the opportunity to kind of look around. But there’s gonna be strong communication there as well.”

Mets will remain in contact with Taijuan Walker:

Starting pitchers Chris Bassitt and Taijuan Walker are two of the next most important free agents the Mets have. When asked about Walker, Eppler said this.

“I believe they enjoyed their time here. We’ll be talking to them too.”

No questions or at least known public statements with regard to Bassitt were made.
