The New York Mets avoided a potentially disastrous sweep out of the All-Star break Sunday night against the San Diego Padres with an 8-5 win at Citi Field.
The Mets got a solid five-inning outing from Carlos Carrasco. He threw 92 pitches and gave up no runs. Carrasco overcame his first-inning struggles. He worked himself out of a few jams with some key double-play ground balls. Overall, the Mets got a more than stellar outing out of Carrasco to win the series finale.
Edwin Diaz was needed to come in for the 9th inning after some bullpen struggles. He recorded his 21st save of the 2022 season.
Jeff McNeil gave some great contributions in the field with his glove at second base. Brandon Nimmo also had a huge catch at the wall in deep left-center field to end the jam Drew Smith faced in the 6th inning.

The Mets bats finally get going
The batting order of the Mets entered this game off tough performances from Friday and Saturday. Offensively, the struggles continued through the first five innings of this one.
Finally, in the 6th inning, the Mets got the bats going. It started with a single from Starling Marte. Francisco Lindor followed him with a double. Then, Pete Alonso hit a big three-run home run to left-center field, his 25th of the year. After that, Daniel Vogelbach walked, and Luis Guillmore had a bloop-hit for an RBI. It concluded with Tomas Nido hitting one to deep right-center for an RBI double. This five-run 6th inning was needed in a big way for the Mets.
The Mets followed that up with a three-run 7th inning. Once again, it started with Marte, who walked. Lindor had his second hit of the night, a single. Alonso nearly hit his second three-run homer with an RBI double off the wall, giving him four runs batted in for the night, putting him up to 82 on the season. The final scored runs came from an infield hit by Mark Canha.
It was great to get two-hit games from Marte, Lindor, Alonso, and Canha. Moving forward, it will be needed for the Mets lineup.
Lastly, in his Met-debut, Vogelbach got on base twice with a single and walk, which led to a run scored. He had a couple of solid at-bats.
