The Knicks had been actively searching for a veteran point guard, despite recently drafting Marquette rookie Tyler Kolek with one of their second-round picks. Kolek is known for his excellent vision and ability to lead on the floor. However, his lack of experience is a notable concern for the team, prompting the search for a more seasoned player to stabilize the position.

Knicks Seek Veteran Leadership at Point Guard

On Monday, the Knicks finalized a deal with Cameron Payne, signing him to a one-year contract worth $3.1 million. Payne, who is close friends with Mikal Bridges, brings not only personal chemistry but also a reliable option off the bench. His presence will be crucial, especially if Kolek fails to progress as expected or struggles during games.

Missed Opportunity with Kyle Lowry

Prior to settling on Payne, the Knicks had shown interest in veteran guard Kyle Lowry. However, Lowry chose to stay with the Philadelphia 76ers, signing a one-year deal for $3.3 million.

Lowry’s Recent Performance and Future Prospects

This past season, Lowry averaged 8.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game, shooting 43.2% from the field and 39.2% from beyond the arc. He played 37 games for Miami and 23 regular-season games for Philadelphia, contributing significantly in the postseason despite the 76ers’ early exit, which ironically came at the hands of the Knicks.

Lowry had also been linked with the Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns before deciding to re-sign with Philadelphia. Now at 38, with the recent addition of Paul George to the 76ers, Lowry is poised to chase another championship.
