After missing most of the training camp and the New York Knicks‘ first three preseason games, second-year wing Quentin Grimes will finally make his return.
New York coach Tom Thibodeau told reporters that Grimes would make his much-awaited comeback from a left foot soreness against the Washington Wizards on Friday night.
Grimes rued his missed opportunity to compete for the starting shooting guard spot which currently belongs to incumbent Evan Fournier.
The Knicks have high hopes for the former Houston Cougars star as he was not made available in the failed Donovan Mitchell trade talks despite Utah Jazz’s interest in him. They also kept him off the Cam Reddish trade last season when the Atlanta Hawks asked for him.
Before the left foot injury, Grimes had a stellar run in the NBA Summer League where he led the Knicks to the championship game. Grimes earned a spot in the All-NBA Summer League team after averaging averaging a team-high 22.6 points and 3.4 3s per game on 41.4 percent overall shooting. He also dded 4.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists against 3.2 turnovers and 1.2 steals.
Grimes is expected to start the season on the Knicks’ second unit, but New York coach Tom Thibodeau hasn’t ruled him out for a possible promotion to the starting unit if he lives up to the hype.
