Strahan: New York Giants Should Let Murray Learn Behind Manning

It wasn’t that long ago that Mel Kiper Jr. predicted that the New York Giants would draft Dwayne Haskins, and former wide receiver Plaxico Burress claiming they should make a move for the Ohio State quarterback. However, opinion on what the Giants should do with the #6 overall draft pick isn’t uniform across the board, and recently, another former Giant has come out with an opinion about what the team should do with their pick. That opinion differs from the popular one, and supports taking Kyler Murray over Haskins.

“I’d draft Murray and then I’d let him learn from Eli for the year or eight, nine, 10 games. That’s what we did with Kurt Warner,” said Michael Strahan, on the Dan Patrick Show. It’s easy to forget Kurt Warner’s time with the Giants because of more notable stints with the Rams and Cardinals, but Warner did play on the team in 2004 and eventually lost the starting job to the freshly drafted Eli Manning.

Now, Manning potentially faces the same fate that many other quarterbacks of the past have also suffered. It looks like the Giants might be planning on drafting his replacement, but who that replacement is remains unclear. Perhaps the top two names in the running, though, are Dwayne Haskins Jr. and Kyler Murray, two of the top college performers this season.

Of course, any change at quarterback would bring controversy with it, but Strahan also claimed that after the Giants switched from Warner to Manning, he believed they had “no shot”. Obviously, things turned out differently, and it wouldn’t be out of the question for a new quarterback to have unexpected success this season either.

Kyler Murray may very well be the available quarterback by the time the Giants make their first round pick, but it also might not be wise to draft a risky player so high. With Murray’s small size and experience in a very different offense among other things, it wouldn’t be surprising at all for Murray to fall to a later spot in the round.
