John Mara, managing partner of the New York Giants, is providing head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen with substantial time to orchestrate a turnaround. Following an encouraging debut season that culminated in a playoff berth, the team experienced a regression last year, mirroring the trajectory of previous Giants coaching tenures.

The Giants Are Making Progress, But Slowly

Schoen has made significant strides in resolving the Giants’ salary cap dilemmas and enhancing the roster with promising athletic talent. Despite these improvements and the team’s augmented potential, challenges persist, particularly in the secondary and with quarterback Daniel Jones, who continues to strive to justify his $40 million annual contract.

Coaching Pressures and Expectations

Cody Benjamin, a CBS sports reporter, suggests that Daboll should be considered on the hot seat this upcoming season, especially given the team’s downturn last year. It’s crucial to remember that Daboll was named Coach of the Year in 2022, but in the ever-demanding NFL, recent performances weigh heavily.

“Few current coaches have seen their stock rise and fall in such a short period of time. Appropriately crowned Coach of the Year for rejuvenating Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley en route to a surprise playoff win in 2022, Daboll was far more mercurial as a leader and situational play-caller amid his roster’s rash of injuries in 2023. After exiling strong-willed defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, he’ll be charged with reviving Jones once more, and securing commitment from a club that hasn’t kept a coach for more than two years since Tom Coughlin.”

Despite the pressures, Daboll is expected to have a chance to correct course. Even if struggles persist this season, Mara is unlikely to dismiss him until there is an opportunity to address the quarterback situation fully. While a successful season from Jones could reinforce his tenure with the Giants, only an exceptional, Pro Bowl-level performance would solidify his long-term prospects with the team.

A Call for Daboll to Assert Control

However, there’s a strong case for Daboll to assert more direct control over the team’s offensive strategy by taking on playcalling duties. Hired for his offensive acumen and quarterback development skills, Daboll embracing the playcaller role could be crucial for demonstrating his capability and steering the team’s strategy effectively.
