The New York Giants made a roster move on Tuesday afternoon, electing to waive former Mr. Irrelevant and third-year linebacker, Tae Crowder.
Crowder joined the Giants in 2020 after being drafted from Georgia in the 7th round. Crowder played 403 snaps as a rookie, struggling in most categories.
Last season under the leadership of Patrick Graham on defense, he played over 1000 snaps, tallying 130 combined tackles with three tackles for a loss and two interceptions. This season, he’s struggled to find a role in Wink Martindale’s defense, playing in 445 snaps before being conceivably benched in Week 8 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Crowder took to social media to ask for his release, having played minimal reps since then. He specifically stated, “Free me.”
In fact, over the last four games, he’s played a combined 46 snaps, hosting a 23.7% missed tackle rate on the season. That is his worst metric by a significant margin and one the Giants simply couldn’t rely on any longer.
Head coach Brian Daboll decided to roll with one of his own draft picks from this season, Micah McFadden, out of Indiana. McFadden has struggled in his own right, but at the very least, he projects to have a future on the team, whereas Crowder was likely to be cut anyway after the season concludes.
