Happy New Year, New York Giants fans!

“The juice was worth the squeeze,” New York Giants’ GM Dave Gettleman stated after answering a question about the trade that brought former Jet, Leonard Williams, to Big Blue.

Williams, who hadn’t recorded a sack all season with the Jets, logged just 0.5 sacks with the Giants throughout eight games. However, he did make a difference against the run, lowering the average yards per game by opposing running back by about 18.

Williams simply wasn’t worth the value Gettleman gave up for him, despite expressing the collaboration on the deal within the Giants’ organization. The Giants gave up a third and fifth-round pick that would become a fourth if Williams sticks with Big Blue. Gettleman dug himself a hole with this deal. Now, he has no choice but to sign Williams to an extension; otherwise, he will forfeit a fifth-round pick and move back in the third round upon the compensatory selection.

This was, by far, one of the more interesting moves Gettleman has made during his two-year tenure with the Giants, and that’s including the Odell Beckham Jr. trade and Daniel Jones selection. Time proves everything, though, and it’s undoubtedly possible Williams produced in the future. His contract is the primary concern now, as he expects to be paid like a top defensive tackle in the NFL, which is ludicrous.

A few additional quotes from Gettleman’s presser regarding Leonard:

“Now we know what we have, and we were willing to do that. We felt we needed him.”

“He buzzes around the quarterback. We have to get him to finish right now.”

“We felt he could be a disruptive force inside, and he has been.”
