After a first year that looked good despite the team’s on the field play not being very good, New York Giants GM Dave Gettleman is faced with his biggest challenge since taking the reigns and replacing Jerry Reese. That challenge is figuring out the right move to make with a top ten draft pick for the second straight year. This time, it’s the sixth pick that the Giants have, and a quarterback is the player that many think the team will take.

There’s considerable pressure on Gettleman to make the right choice, but it won’t just be Gettleman making the decision for the Giants. There’s others helping to advise the front office, and that includes legendary former GM Ernie Accorsi, who was responsible for the Giants making the move for Eli Manning.

“I have one of the best consiglieres of all time. I talk to Ernie all the time and what Ernie did for the Giants, it would be a dream for me to do the same thing,” said Gettleman, at the NFL Combine. Doing the same thing as Accorsi, of course, would mean drafting another franchise quarterback that can last through the years.

Gettleman has already acquired one franchise caliber player with Saqoun Barkley, but finding a top running back has been easier in recent years than finding a top quarterback. And, while Gettleman has stated the team’s intent to stay with Eli Manning, it looks like the Giants are seemingly sure to either take a quarterback this year or next year.

“I think at the end of the day, you can’t say to yourself, ‘I’m going to get him next year,’ You evaluate the Q’s, and you take the guy when you believe he’s the guy and it’s at the right spot. You can’t worry about the future because now someone else is going to say, well, in two years there are a couple college quarterbacks that are coming out that are really amazing.”
