Dave Gettleman may just be the source of a number of problems for the New York Giants – he’s had a couple offseasons to work on the team, but the Giants haven’t gotten any better as he’s brought his own players in and shaped the team according to his plans. The lack of a major offensive line improvement despite this area being targeted, the failures in the secondary, and strange moves such as the Leonard Williams trade have been criticized plenty.

But according to former Colts GM Bill Polian, there’s a plan underneath it all. Of course, Gettleman himself has talked about having a plan, but the initial faith put in him by fans has worn thin after the Giants have been put on pace for their worse season despite being multiple years into this plan.

Still, Polian believes Gettleman’s plan is already in progress, even if the results aren’t visible yet.

“It starts with solidifying the fronts on both sides of the ball. It’s obvious that there’s still work to do there,” Polian told WFAN.

He says that things will be easier in the future now that the Giants have located franchise players in Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones.

“So that’s taken care of, and it’s a lot easier to move faster when you have those pieces in place. If you’re searching for them, it really takes a lot of the oxygen out of the room.”

Gettleman may have one more offseason to work on getting something going, before patience also runs out from ownership. Of course, most in the fanbase would prefer to see the General Manager gone right now, allowing the Giants to start fresh this offseason and begin the process of another, hopefully more successful, rebuild.

The Giants’ ownership, however, is likely to make attempts at avoiding being seen as panicking, and firing a General Manager too quickly – which, for better or worse, may just mean that fans have to wait one more season before the team gets a chance at starting fresh.

If that is the case, one can hope that Gettleman’s plan does work out better in his third year than in his first or second.
