New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen held his end-of-season press conference on Monday after the team released a statement saying that he will return as GM for the 2025 season. After a disappointing 2024 season that saw the team go 3-14 and finish tied with the Titans and Browns for the worst record in the league, the pressure is on for Schoen to build a competitive roster for next season.
Giants’ Joe Schoen claims that he won’t make irrational moves this offseason
At his presser, he stated that the organization is not going to make panic moves for the sake of saving face, and rather will stick to their plan:
“I’m not going to do a Hail Mary,” Schoen said regarding the team’s offseason plans, via Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic.
The Giants have a ton of areas that need some work, most notably at the quarterback position and in the secondary on defense. New York had the second-lowest scoring offense in the league this season with just 16.1 points per game, and experienced turbulence at quarterback following the release of Daniel Jones after he struggled through the first 10 games.
On defense, things weren’t much better, as they allowed 24.4 points per game on that end as well as the sixth-most rushing yards per game allowed at 136.2. Giants owner John Mara was very critical about the team’s performance defensively on Monday, which could also indicate change will be made at defensive coordinator.
The Giants are heading into a big offseason
The Giants have big decisions to make at the NFL Draft later this offseason. They currently have the third overall pick behind the Titans (No. 1) and Browns (No. 2), and both teams could be selecting a quarterback, which could then force New York to pivot to a different position of need in the draft.
The hope was that they would be in a position to take the quarterback of their choosing – either Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward – but now they no longer have that luxury and have to prepare for the possibility of searching for a quarterback in free agency.
Sam Darnold projects to be the best free-agent quarterback available after leading the Vikings to a 14-3 record and a playoff berth. However, Minnesota might attempt to keep Darnold around long-term, so the Giants may need to look for a bridge quarterback for a year until they can find the right guy in the next draft.
This offseason will have a massive impact on Schoen’s future as GM. He’s been given one more chance to bring in premier talent and build a roster that is at least progressing towards competing next season, and it is up to him to make the right decisions leading up to next season.
