The UFC is working to finalize a big time main event in the welterweight division. MMA Junkie reported earlier today that the promotion is close to finalizing a headliner in September between former title challenger Gilbert Burns (22-7) and Sean Brady (16-1).

The two top eight welterweights would battle it out on September 7th in the final show before the massive Sphere show from Las Vegas. In this fight, Brady will be looking for his second straight win after bouncing back from his first loss.

In 2022, Sean Brady was unbeaten and he was scheduled to take on Belal Muhammad. With a win, Brady would’ve been right in the title picture at 170. However, Muhammad dominated the fight and stopped Brady in the second round. With that loss, Brady lost a ton of steam.

However, he bounced back incredibly strong last December when he submitted Kelvin Gastelum after dominating the former middleweight title challenger. If Brady can beat Burns, he’ll be one step closer to UFC title contention.

While Brady will look for his second straight win, Gilbert Burns will be looking to avoid his third straight loss. Burns last fought in March when he took on Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 299. In that fight, Burns was able to use his grappling and found himself in a favorable position in the third round.

After taking JDM down, it looked like Burns would go on to win a decision. However, JDM got back to his feet and blitzed Burns. He caught him flush with a knee and Burns had the win taken from him in the final 90 seconds of the fight. That loss came on the heels of a decision loss to Belal Muhammad.

I still firmly believe that Burns is one of the best in the UFC, but he really needs to get a win. If he loses his third in a row, Burns’ run as a top contender at 170 might come to an end.
