UFC 303 is just about a month away and will conclude this year’s International Fight Week. Today, Dana White announced another major fight that’s been added to the main card. Undefeated Irish welterweight Ian Garry (14-0) will get a spot on the card as he takes on the entertaining Michael “Venom” Page (22-2).
Garry being a fellow Irishman desperately wanted a spot on the same card as Conor McGregor. Garry recently said that he’s accepted a number of different opponents after initially saying that he only wanted to fight guys who were ranked higher. There was some talk about Garry facing Colby Covington.
However, behind the scenes, there are rumors that Covington isn’t fully healthy and the fight never materialized. With Garry desperately wanting on the card and with the UFC looking to bolster the McGregor – Chandler main card, they turned to the newly signed Michael “Venom” Page.
UFC 303
After competing in Bellator for years, MVP finally made his way over to the UFC earlier this year. He made his debut back in March when he took on Kevin Holland. MVP dazzled with his speed and flustered Holland across three rounds on his way to winning a unanimous decision.
Page is ranked 13th in the welterweight division and is staring at a golden opportunity to jump up in the rankings. When they make the walk on June 29th, Ian Garry will be holding the 7th spot in the rankings. Should MVP hand him his first professional loss, Page might only be a win or two away from a title shot.
Ian Garry is coming off a split decision win over Geoff Neal. While Garry is unbeaten, the fight against Neal didn’t get fans excited. He wanted to be on UFC 303 because of his relationship with Conor McGregor and he knows for a fact that there will be a major spotlight on this year. If he can put on a huge performance against MVP, his stock will go up in a big way.
