With the Roki Sasaki sweepstakes over, many MLB squads are finally shifting their focus to their bullpens. Many of the top relievers in the market haven’t signed, but we might be approaching a flurry of moves in the next day or two. The Chicago Cubs, of course, are expected to be in the middle of it all.
Cubs reportedly interested in adding Tanner Scott to their bullpen
The Cubs would love to keep adding to their bullpen. The unit was far from a disaster last year but ranked 12th in ERA with a 3.81 mark. In order to move closer to contention for a postseason spot, Chicago needs to protect late leads with consistency.

The Cubs have already added righty reliever Eli Morgan via trade with the Cleveland Guardians, and lefty Caleb Thielbar as a free agent. Do they have another big bullpen move in them? Well, they could. Per reports, they are interested in one of the best available names:
“The Cubs are among the top remaining suitors for Tanner Scott, sources say. Scott could decide from among several multiyear offers this weekend,” MLB insider Jon Morosi posted on X.
Scott is said to be looking for a four-year deal worth around $80 million. While that’s a lot of money and years, the southpaw has plenty of suitors and there is a chance someone will give him something close to that. Will it be the Cubs? Is he worth that much?

Scott would really help the Cubs
Scott certainly had an amazing 2024 campaign with the Miami Marlins and then with the San Diego Padres. He had a 1.75 ERA struck out 84 batters in 72 frames, and has plenty of experience as a closer. The Cubs are in a position to offer Scott something that not every team can: a clear path toward the closer role.
The expectation is that Scott signs this weekend or at least not too long after it. The Cubs are reportedly stepping up their efforts to land him after missing out on Sasaki. Thanks to the addition of Kyle Tucker, Matthew Boyd, Colin Rea, and the aforementioned relievers, the Cubs now look like a dangerous team in the NL Central. Having Scott protecting late leads will further strengthen their case.
