The New York Yankees are currently on a three-game losing streak after falling to the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday afternoon. During this losing streak, the Yankees have only scored 10 runs, as their offense has simmered down to a bowl of cold chicken noodle soup.
However, the return of several starters hasn’t exactly added value to the team, for example, starting shortstop Gleyber Torres has struggled since his return from a thumb injury he sustained during the winning streak. Torres continues to have issues defensively, posting a .958 fielding percentage while the league average hovers at .974 at his position.
Torres currently has 15 errors at shortstop, once again showcasing his lack of efficiency at the spot. In fact, he turned more double plays in 30 fewer games during the 2019 season at the same position, even posting a higher fielding percentage. Oddly, he has regressed despite being one of the more stout offensive players on the team.
However, Torres has also struggled offensively too, hitting .253 this season with six homers and 43 RBIs. He has only hit 23 extra-base hits but ranks near the bottom of the league players over 300 at-bats.
Seemingly, the Yankees were more successful with Andrew Velazquez at shortstop, as he provided a bit more athleticism on the base paths and was a solid defender for the most part. As for the loss on Monday, Torres struck out twice and failed to get on base.
On a more positive note, Derek Jeter has been the talk of the town lately as he’s preparing to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The Yankees probably wish they had him as their shortstop still, but instead we will be honoring his memory and the fantastic plays he made over 20 seasons donning the pinstripes.
Robinson Cano tweeted a heartfelt message to former teammates Derek Jeter, saying:
