The Yankees would roll into the Bronx riding a five-game winning streak including a dramatic comeback against the San Francisco Giants to complete a three-game sweep. With Luis Gil on the mound, New York would have their best pitcher going up against Bailey Ober, who has scuffled a bit in his recent outings. The Twins hosted the Yankees last month in a series that New York swept them in, and they would continue their ownage of Minnesota tonight in this dominant win for the hottest team in baseball.
With another great start from the best pitcher in the American League right now and some timely hits, the Bronx Bombers made it six-in-a-row as they collected a clean 5-1 victory.
Luis Gil Dominates Again in Yankees’ Stress-Free Win
After winning AL Pitcher of the Month and AL Rookie of the Month in May, the right-hander would start the month of June on the right foot. Firing six innings of shutout baseball, Luis Gil allowed just one hit and three walks with six strikeouts as he carved through a Minnesota lineup that had played better baseball as of late. The right-hander seemed to lose some of his command later on in the start, but he gutted through it and showed maturation in his 12th start of the season.
Two months ago, he would have unraveled and given the Twins a chance to get back into the game with consecutive walks, but he kept his composure and made some huge pitches in big spots. His ERA is 1.82 on the year; the lowest mark in the American League thus far. When the Yankees lost Gerrit Cole, it opened up a spot in their rotation for Gil, who has outperformed anything they could have reasonably imagined. This is Cy Young-level production right now, and it was complimented with some very timely hits.
Gleyber Torres opened the scoring for the Yankees in the second inning as he clubbed a porch job over the right field fence to make it 1-0, a lead the team wouldn’t relinquish. Aaron Judge dunked a two-run double into right field to make it a 3-0 game, and the Twins pulled it to within one run in the top of the seventh as Royce Lewis made his presence felt with a solo blast off of Tommy Kahnle, it would be the only run they could scrape across tonight.
In the bottom of the eighth, Giancarlo Stanton seemed very disinterested in this being a save opportunity for Luke Weaver, as he belted a two-run blast to give the Yankees more insurance, as Weaver retired the side in order. The Yankees have the lowest ERA in baseball, they have the best OPS in baseball, and they’re tied with the Phillies for the best record in baseball. They’re simply on a roll right now, and they’ll hope to keep the good times rolling with Carlos Rodon and Chris Paddack having a rematch tomorrow night, first pitch is at 7:05 PM and on Amazon Prime Video.
