Yankees’ Luis Severino shows great progress in first rehab assignment

As the struggling New York Yankees await the return of starter Luis Severino, some good news was provided on the pitcher yesterday.

Luis Severino makes first minor-league assignment, pitches well:

The two-time All-Star threw his first minor-league rehab assignment game yesterday. Severino threw for the Low-A Tampa Tarpons. He went two innings, not allowing a run. The 28-year-old threw 22 pitches, gave up one hit, did not allow a walk, and recorded three strikeouts.

Severino threw his hardest pitch at 97.3 mph. The goal in mind for the Yankees is that Severino can be added to their starting rotation come mid-September. To be able to add him down the stretch and into the playoffs could make a difference for this Yankees team that needs help.

The Yankees have been impressed with Sevy’s stuff this season:

In 16 starts this year, Severino is 5-3 with a 3.45 ERA (33 earned runs). Severino has totaled 95 strikeouts in his 86 innings pitched this season and has allowed 67 hits. It leaves him with a 1.07 WHIP.

Ideally, within the next two weeks, the Yankees can add a key starter in Severino to their rotation. The Yankees have dropped five out of their last six, and their division lead has now been shrunk to just five games. Simply, they can take any help they can possibly get.
