Yankees: Is it time for Clint Frazier to become a permanent starter?

New York Yankees, Clint Frazier

The New York Yankees always nominate OF Clint Frazier as their trade bait. Since he came over from Cleveland, he’s been a player the Yankees were willing to give away. But over the last year, Clint Frazier’s importance to the team has increased.

There have been too many injuries to the Yankees’ outfield that have forced them to keep their outfield depth. Clint Frazier plays a huge role in that. Every time he’s given an opportunity on the big stage, he comes through. He’s been ready to become an everyday starter in the MLB for a long time now. Is it time the Yankees make the move?

The case for Clint:

Clint Frazier’s only negative last year was his fielding. This year, he is yet to have an error and has even made the highlight reel on multiple occasions. This is extremely encouraging for the Yankees. You have a player that is committed to fixing his flaws and will work hard to do so. Why would you want to give that up?

Every game, it is looking more and more like this will be Brett Gardner’s last season. He can handle the workload in the field but his bat is just not good enough anymore. With Frazier improving his outfield skills, I would feel very comfortable with that replacement. If you think there is anything to compare offensively other than speed between the two, then I can’t help you. Frazier can hit for power, has good speed, and gets on base at a higher rate. Gardner has the worst average, on-base percentage, and OPS in his career this year. I think it’s time he hangs up the jersey.

When the Yankees get healthy again, don’t be surprised if the Yankees play Gardner less and less. Frazier is young and keeps getting better every year he steps on the field. That was the case for Gardner for a long time as well. However, this year has definitely been his worst. He is serving a one year deal and I wouldn’t be surprised if the team is already looking in another direction. In my opinion, Frazier is that direction. He’s earned a spot on the Yankees’ roster. I think it’s about time New York gives him that honor.
