The Yankees settled with the majority of their eligible players heading into arbitration. With Friday representing the deadline to get deals done, the Bombers signed nine players to avoid arbitration but still have to deal with Gleyber Torres and Jimmy Cordero.
Torres was seeking a hefty price tag of $10.2 million, but the Yankees came in just under that and seemingly refused to budge.
Now, they could be headed toward a rare arbitration hearing, as Torres and the Yankees were unable to settle on a deal for next season before Friday’s deadline, with Torres filing at $10.2 million and the team countering with an offer of $9.7 million, The Post’s Jon Heyman reported.

Considering all the rumors indicating Torres could be traded and the Yankees actively listening to offers, including him at the trade deadline, it is no surprise he’s trying to swindle every last dollar he can.
At 26 years old, Torres is coming off a bounce-back season in 2022. He hit .257 with a .310 OBP, 24 homers, 76 RBIs, and 115 wRC+. He recorded a 2.7 WAR, his best metric since the 2019 season. His Steamer projections have him hitting .262 with a .327 OBP, 23 homers, and 76 RBIs to go with a 120 wRC+ this upcoming season.
It is possible that both sides come to a conclusion before a potential hearing, which would likely be ideal. Of the others that avoided arbitration, they include Michael King, Clay Holmes, Frankie Montas, Jose Treviño, Kyle Higashioka, Domingo German, Jonathan Loáisiga, Nestor Cortés, and Wandy Peralta.
