The New York Yankees (44-19) have everything going for them with the halfway mark of the 2024 MLB season around the corner, but they’ll hold off on adding another talented player to their mix at the present.
Yankees top prospect Jasson Dominguez just came off of a 20-day rehab assignment that gave fans hope that he’d get called up to replace a struggling Trent Grisham in the lineup. Though he played lights out while rounding into shape, the 21-year-old will see more time in the minors to get regular reps every day at 100 percent strength.
Yankees won’t bring No. 1 prospect Jasson Dominguez back up from injury just yet
Randy Miller of NJ.com reported that the Yankees will hold off on bringing Dominguez into the fold, and have extended his minor league stint for another 10 days at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre beginning on Tuesday, saying this about the developing dynamic:
“They aren’t going to dump struggling extra outfielder Trent Grisham for No. 1 prospect Jasson Dominguez, whose 20-day rehab assignment ended on Sunday,” Miller wrote.
“That could be a strong possibility – or probability – when it comes time to set playoff rosters in October, but not now.”
In his last 10 games alone, the Dominican slugger has registered a whopping 18 hits, four of which have been home runs, off of a .310/.375/.552 slash line. In contrast, Grisham has gone up to bat 17 times in the last 28 days without registering a hit. He only has one run scored to show for compared to nine strikeouts in that span.
- The Yankees need 2 super sluggers to step up after horrid Game 1 performance
- Yankees’ polarizing outfielder quiets the haters with big performance
- Yankees’ controversial bullpen arm could be the key to a deep run
Trent Grisham survives another day as Yankees starting CF with Jasson Dominguez rise
Grisham has played well in 20 outings at center field. He’s posted a perfect fielding percentage with 33 putouts in 35 chances and one double play turned. Meanwhile, Dominguez has also been perfect in center field in Triple-A and in Double-A prior to that.
Despite the discrepancy in performance, keenly on offense, the Yankees feel as though Dominguez needs more time to work his way back. He’s five days away from the nine-month mark of tearing his UCL which warranted Tommy John surgery on Sept. 20.
New York is hoping for the righty to take the flashes of brilliance he showed across a mere eight games in his rookie season in 2023 and make that the norm, once they feel he’s ready to own the CF slot and a spot in the batting order. For now, he’ll continue to develop while Grisham looks to put his current funk behind him.
