The New York Yankees made several roster adjustments in preparation for their upcoming game against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. These moves come in response to the unfortunate loss of two key bullpen pitchers, Ian Hamilton and Cody Poteet, due to injuries, adding pressure on the team as they approach a critical phase of the season.
Yankees Navigate Roster Challenges Ahead of Orioles Series
Ian Hamilton has suffered a lat injury, and Cody Poteet is dealing with a triceps issue, sidelining both for a few weeks. This timing is particularly challenging given that Gerrit Cole is just making his return to the rotation. While Cole’s comeback is a boost, the bullpen’s depth will be tested in his absence as the team manages these new injury setbacks.
In response to these challenges, the Yankees have promoted two pitchers to the major league roster. Clayton Andrews, a 27-year-old lefty, has been called up despite a rocky start this season in Triple-A, where he posted a 5.84 ERA over 24.2 innings.
Known for his ground ball tendencies, Andrews has struggled with pitch location and has limited MLB experience, totaling only 3.2 innings with the Milwaukee Brewers last season. Notably, he stands as the shortest relief arm in baseball at 5’6″.
Anthony Misiewicz, a 29-year-old left-hander, has also been promoted. Misiewicz brings more major league experience, with 114.2 innings under his belt and a career ERA of 4.71. He has previously played for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Detroit Tigers and briefly for the Yankees last season, where he recorded a 3.38 ERA over 2.2 innings.

These promotions are interim solutions as General Manager Brian Cashman eyes the trade deadline at the end of July for more substantial reinforcements. The team is also hopeful for the return of Lou Trivino and Scott Effross, who are recovering from injuries. However, given the current situation and the potential for further injuries, Cashman may need to secure additional support to ensure the bullpen is robust enough for a deep playoff run.
