The New York Yankees are gearing up for a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays this Friday, marking the start of their post-All-Star break season. In preparation, the team has activated veteran infielder J.D. Davis from the injured list after he recovered from a bout of stomach flu.

Yankees Set to Re-engage Post All-Star Break with Series Against Rays

Recently acquired from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Jordan Groshans, the 31-year-old Davis has struggled to find his form this season. Despite his history of above-average offensive output over the past five years, his current season statistics stand at a modest .221 batting average with a .293 on-base percentage and a .346 slugging percentage. He has contributed four home runs and six RBIs, but his strikeout rate has climbed to 24% with a walk rate of only 7.3%.

Review of Davis’s Recent Performance

Davis, who hit .248 with a .325 OBP last season, including 18 homers and 69 RBIs, is witnessing a gradual decline in his offensive capabilities. Although he had several standout seasons with the New York Mets, his recent performances have not matched his past productivity.

Moreover, while Davis still provides some defensive utility at first base with a .993 fielding percentage over 170 innings and only one error this year, his effectiveness at third base has notably decreased. His time at third base this season with Oakland, covering 97 innings, has not compensated for a -11 defensive runs saved recorded last year over 915.2 innings with the San Francisco Giants.

Yankees’ Strategy at the Trade Deadline

While Davis is considered a competent depth piece for the Yankees, General Manager Brian Cashman recognizes the need for more impactful enhancements. As the trade deadline approaches, Cashman is expected to be aggressive in seeking additions to the infield, aiming to secure an above-average player to bolster the team’s lineup and improve their competitive edge.
