Last year the New York Yankees had unprecedented injuries, seeing 30 players go on the IL in 39 separate incidences.  This year barring a repeat of all the injuries, manager Aaron Boone may have a lineup that doesn’t have to change daily, just to put nine men on the field.  The New York Yankees right now can put up a lineup that is second to none in power and talent.  For opposing pitchers they will face a lineup where there is no letup as he pitches his way from the first to the ninth man.  Add to that powerful designated hitters and a deep bench.  In a lineup that starts out with Silver Slugger DJ LeMahieu and then goes from there to the “Fearsome Foursome” of Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Staton, Gleyber Torres, and Gary Sanchez, who if they stay healthy is fully capable of hitting 150 home runs or more.  Other possibilities to complete the lineup are Gio Urshela who got 21 home runs in 132 games, Brett Gardner with 28 homers,  Luke Voit that got 21 homers in 118 games and a possible DH of Miguel Andujar with his 27 home runs during 2018.   That’s roughly 250 home runs without any of the other players like Mike Ford, Mike Tauchman and others.  Barring any injuries, the lineup should surpass last year’s total of 306 homers, unless the Umpire’s Union deadens the ball.

Considering that the Yankees have capable hitters to put men on bases, such as DJ LeMahieu, Gio Urshela, and Mike Tauchman and others, we should also see more runs crossing the home plate.  The Fearsome Foursome really didn’t get to show their power and consistency at the plate.  With them together, pitchers will have trouble getting past them unscathed.  Let’s take a look at what they could do this year.

AARON JUDGE:  Judge was well on his way to another great year before his injury.  Last year he had 27 home runs in 2019 while playing in a shortened season of only 102 games.  He did the same in 2018 with a similar number of games, but in the 2017 season, he hit 52 home runs in 155 games and a healthy season.  It is reasonable to assume he will hit over 40 home runs this coming season and may surprise us with even more.  With on-base DJ hitting ahead of him you can also assume more runs will cross the plate.

GIANCARLO STANTON:   In an injury-riddled season Giancarlo Stanton played in only 18 games.  In 2018 he hit 38 home runs and in 2017 he hit 59.  If he can stay healthy this year, one would expect at least 40 home runs from the slugger. The big guy has a lot to play for this year.  He can opt-out of his contract at the end of the year, although I doubt he will. He has something to prove this year with all the talent on the team.  I believe he will become that premier player the Yankee fans want to see from him.

GLEYBER TORRES:  Gleyber Torres burst onto the scene in his debut year 2018.  He hit 24 long balls and in his break out 2019 season, he hit 38 homers.  Torres is not even in his prime yet.  All sources believe he will only get better each year.  In a year with healthy power hitters around him, it reasonable to assume he will better last season, this season as he plays in even more games.

GARY SANCHEZ:  Gary Sanchez is a question as to his ability to stay healthy.  Hopefully, the new medical and training staff can keep him from having his historic groin injuries.  If they can, Gary is a guy with a lot of talent and a lot of power.  If he can lessen his strikeouts and play a reasonably whole season he could lead the team in home runs.  Last year playing in only 106 games he hit 34 long balls, some of the huge blasts.  Sanchez needs to catch consistently in order to be successful.  History with him has also shown that he is slow to return to form after an injury.

I have said it before and I’ll say it again, the New York Yankees have incredible depth and many can step in. in the next man up mentality and fill in successfully.  With a lingering Miguel Andujar in the lineup or on the bench, the Yankees can have another big bat to count on.  This 2020 lineup can exceed all expectations if it can stay healthy.
