New York Yankees: Will the Yankees become the Tampa, Florida Yankees this season?

The New York Yankees have the unfortunate situation of having their home park Yankee Stadium at the epicenter of the coronavirus.  Because of that, when the baseball season starts, the Yankees may not be able to play ball at Yankee Stadium, at least at the beginning of the season.

With all the uncertainty revolving around the virus and social distancing, the New York Yankees and all of MLB may have to be creative in getting the season started.  The Yankees are already investigating possible sites where they might start their season.  Under consideration is, of course, the home park in the Bronx, but if that is not possible these are other considerations: Marlins Park in Miami, home of the Florida Marlins, Tropicana Field home of the Tampa Bay Rays, or they may want to use George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa Florida.

Steinbrenner Field is a beautiful spring training home of the Yankees.  There are pluses and minuses to using that park.  One of the pluses is the Yankee players feel at home there as they have spring training there each year.   Also, when injured, they usually do their rehab there.  It is a state of the art ballpark.  Originally called Legends Field, it was renamed George M. Steinbrenner Field.

The complex was renamed for the Yankees’ longtime Principal Owner on March 27, 2008, following two unanimous resolutions supporting the change issued by the Hillsborough County Commission and the Tampa City Council. The resolutions cited Mr. Steinbrenner’s many charitable donations to youth activities, hospitals, and the arts, and recognized his numerous extraordinary contributions to the area.

It has all the amenities that the Yankee players would need to have a successful season.  The only minus to selected Steinbrenner field is its size.  Although the massive complex covers 31 acres, it seats only 11,000 fans.  A big question for the Yankees would it be financially better to have a season in their own southern home or to share revenues with the Marlins or the Rays.

Other questions would include the logistics of scheduling between the clubs if foreign parks were used.  Steinbrenner Field is a popular venue for concerts and other events that may already be scheduled.  Another logistical problem that would have to be resolved is that the minor league New York Yankee Tampa Tarpons play there.  Their season was originally scheduled to run from late April to early September.

One thing is for sure in this time of great confusion, is that MBL will have the nightmare of figuring this all out for all teams that may be affected.  They have been so busy trying to get this all figured out that Commissioner Rob Manfred. However, he has concluded his investigation into the Red Sox cheating. He hasn’t had time to write up his report and indicate what punishments might be placed on the Sox.

This baseball season, if there is one will look very different from any season Yankee fans have experienced in their lifetimes.   As of last week, Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Giancarlo Stanton, Tyler Wade, and Luke Voit were still training while observing social distancing at the Tampa facility.  Whether they will remain there throughout the delay in the season remains unclear.  New York Yankees General Manager is still there and will remain there unless the complex is closed down entirely.  Aaron Boone and newly acquired pitching ace Gerrit Cole are both at their homes in Greenwich, CT, and have been playing catch together.
