The New York Yankees have a rich history in baseball going back 107 years. With such a long history, it’s no surprise that each day has historical connections with the past.  Today is no different.

Back in 1940, Bill Dickey’s backup catcher Buddy Rosar triples in the first inning, singled in the second, homers in the fourth and doubled in the sixth for the Yankees ninth hitting for the cycle in Yankee history.

On this day in 1955, Enos Slaughter, at the age of 43 years, 83 days, he becomes the oldest Yankees player ever to hit a home run in a game. Remarkably he hit two home runs for the first time in seven years.

In 1977 the Yankees took possession of the newly remodeled Yankee Stadium.  They also, on this day, hosted the 48th Annual All-Star game that featured Reggie Jackson and Willie Randolph as starters in the game.

1990:  Dave Righetti pitches his 499th game for the Yankees toping Whitey Ford for the most pitched games in New York Yankees history.  That feat would be undone by Mariano Rivera in 2004.

Preview of tonight’s Yankee/Mets game

For the second night in a row, the Yankees will match off against their crosstown rival New York Mets.  This time at an empty Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.  The Yankees took last night’s game 9-3.

Tonight the New York Yankees brass and fans will be watching closely as Jordan Montgomery takes the mound against the Mets right-hander Corey Oswalt.  The Yankees have suggested that Montgomery will be the fifth starter in the Yankee pitching rotation in this shortened season.

The 27-year-old lefty was born in Sumter, South Carolina. Monty is tall, 6’6′, and weighs 225 pounds. When in Sumter High School, he played baseball and in his senior year, was named the state’s player of the year. After high school he enrolled in the University of South Carolina. He played for the South Carolina Gamecocks, where he again received awards, this time Freshman of the week and Freshman All-American. He played well enough in college to warrant the attention of major league baseball scouts.

In the 2014 major league baseball draft, Montgomery was selected in the fourth round by our Yankees. After his college year, the Yankees limited his pitching to 19 innings as he went 1-1 with an ERA of 3.79. In 2015 Jordan was promoted to the Charleston River Dogs, Montgomery’s pitching continued to impress the Yankees, and in 2016, he began the season with the Trenton Thunder. Still, he was soon promoted to the AAA Scranton Wilkes/Barre Rail Riders. While there he pitched in the triple-A National Championship game in which he won for the Rail Riders.

On April 12, 2017, Monty was promoted to the major leagues. On July 25, he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against the Reds. In 29 starts in 2017, Montgomery finished with a 9-7 record and a 3.88 ERA. After six starts when he was 2-0 with an ERA of 3.86. on May 1 he left a game against the Astros with elbow tightness, he ended up needing Tommy John surgery.

Montgomery, in 2019, upon his return, he went 0-0 in two games.  He impressed the Yankees this year in both spring training and summer camp. Tonight he will try to show the Yankees he deserved that fifth spot in the rotation.

Corey Oswalt has been with the Mets since 2012 and has been very successful in the minors.  In 2018 he was promoted to the major league team.  Since then, he has appeared in 19 games with a record of 3-4 and a high ERA.  Pitching well in the summer camp, the New York Mets are hoping for a bounce-back by Oswalt tonight at the Stadium.

On Monday night at 6 pm, the New York Yankees will face the Philadelphia Phillies at the Stadium in the Bronx. Starting pitchers for that game have not been announced.
