Dyan Jorge is a 16-year-old Cuban shortstop who was declared a free agent by the MLB on February 7th. The New York Yankees have no shortstop prospects, and Jorge shows promise. He is the number 15 on the International top 30 prospects list.  Here are his stats:  Hometown: Havana, Cuba, Position: SS Age: 16 DOB: 3/18/2003 Bats: R Throws: R Height: 6’2″ Weight: 165 lb. Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 60.

Jorge reminds some scouts of Alexei Ramirez because of his athleticism.  Ramirez was a Cuban National the debuted with the White Sox in 2008.  He came in 2nd in the ROY voting, was a Silver Slugger and an All-Star in 2014. The teenager  Jorge is considered by some evaluators as a defense-first type of prospect. Because he is lean and strong he will continue to improve behind the plate as the 16-year-old fills out, develops, and gets even stronger.

Jorge has a solid approach behind the plate and displays a quick and compact swing. He can handle the bat well and is known primarily as a line-drive hitter. He projects to eventually hit anywhere between 10 to 12 home runs in the big leagues. Like some prospects, it might take Jorge time to adjust to the advanced pitching he will face in the United States.

From MLB.com: “What’s certain is Jorge’s ability to catch, run and throw. He has above-average potential in all three of those areas of his game. He is a solid defender that rarely makes a mistake. And while his physical tools don’t always wow evaluators, his performances in games and ability to make key plays on defense or at the plate are hard to ignore. His upside and high baseball IQ combine to make him one of the most interesting prospects on the market.”

The shortstop for Cuba’s team in the 15-U Baseball Cup in Panama in 2018, Jorge defected from Cuba last October. He was declared a free agent by MLB on Feb. 7th and became eligible to sign. Presently Jorge is training in the Dominican Republic with Edwin “Ray” Castillo and is represented by Barry Praver and Scott Shapiro at Magnus Sports.  This could be an excellent pickup for the New York Yankees at a much less expensive procurement price than prospect Jasson Dominguez, that they signed back in July of 2019.  Dominguez is the number one International prospect according to the MLB.
