New York Yankees Recap: Yankees take game two from the Rays in an exciting 10th inning

The New York Yankees entered tonight’s game looking to take the series with a second win after last night’s 4-3 win. Nestor Cortes started for the Yankees with Michael Wacha for the Tampa Bay Rays. At the very last moment before the game, slugger Aaron Judge was removed from the starting lineup favoring Estevan Florial for an unspecified reason. However, it was noted that he did not take part in batting practice earlier in the day. The New York Yankees won the game in one of the most exciting 10th inning baseball fans have seen. The final score was Yankees 3 Rays 1.

At the top of the first inning, DJ LeMahieu faced Wacha and went down swinging. Gleyber Torres walked. Rougie Odor went down on strikeouts. Giancarlo Stanton ground out to second to end the half and leave one on base. At the bottom, Manuel Margot leadoff for the Rays and flew out to Florial in center. Wander Franco fly out to right for the second out. In last night’s game, Austin Meadows went down looking for a 1-2-3 inning for Cortes Jr. No score.

Gary Sanchez led off the second inning by going down on strikes for Wacha’s third strikeout of the game. Brett Gardner flew out to left. Gio Urshela struck out to end the half. At the bottom of the second, Yandy Diaz flew out to Allen in right field. Brandon Lowe struck out. Randy Arozarena went down on strike, putting all six Rays he has faced. No score.

Greg Allen led off the third inning by grounding out to second. Estevan Florial went down on strikes. LeMahieu got a base hit to right for the 37th game in a row with a hit. Torres went down on a changeup. Joey Wendle led off the bottom by grounding out to short. Francisco Mejia managed the first base runner for the Rays with a single up the middle. Brett Phillips went down swinging. Margot lined out to Urshela to end the scoreless inning. No score.

The top of the fourth inning was led off by Rougie Odor, who singled to left. Stanton, Gardner, and Sanchez failed to score in the fourth. At the bottom, Franco singled. Meadows flew out. Diaz went down swinging. Lowe tripled, and Franco scored for the Ray’s first run in the game. Arozarena was hit by a pitch and went to first. Wendle, with men on the corners and two outs lined out to Gardner in left. Tampa Bay Rays 1 New York Yankees 0.

Urshela led off the fifth by reaching on an airmailed throw to first. Greg Allen doubled down the right-field line, moving Urshela to third. Aaron Judge, pinch-hitting for Florial, who may have been traded to the Rangers, struck out for the first out of the inning. LeMahieu got a sac fly tying up the game at one. Torres got a line drive to first for the final out. At the bottom, Mejia against Cortes Jr. with 67 pitches popped out to catcher Sanchez. Phillips popped out to first. Margot flew out to Allen for a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth. Rays 1 Yankees 1.

The sixth inning was led off by Rougie Odor, who, against Drew Rasmussen, struck out. Stanton singled up the middle. Sanchez got the second out. Brett Gardner ground out to end the half. At the bottom, Franco led off against new pitcher Lucas Luetge; he went down on strikes. Meadows went down swinging. Diaz flew out to Gardner in left for the final out. Tampa Bay 1 Yankees 0.

Gio Urshela led off the seventh inning by going down on strikes. Allen flew out to second. Aaron Judge struck out to end the half. At the bottom, Lowe struck out swinging. Arozarena went down on strikes. Wendle popped back to catcher Sanchez to end the inning. New York Yankees 1 Tampa Bay 1.

DJ LeMahieu led off the eighth inning popped out to third. Odo stuck out. With a runner at second and two outs, Santon flew out to right to end the half. At the bottom, Mejia against Zack Britton walked. Phillips hit into a double play for two outs. Margot ground out to short. Yankees 1 Rays 1.

At the top of the ninth with the game tied up at 1, Gary Sanchez against Matt  Wisler singled to left. Tyler Wade was brought in to pinch-run for Sanchez. Gardner flew out to right. Wisler balked with Wade going to second. Urshela hit into an inning-ending double play to end the half. At the bottom with a chance for the Rays to walk off, Kyle Higashioka took over the catching for the Yankees, and with Chad Green, on the mound, Franco chopped out to first. Meadows flew out to Allen in center. Diaz also flew out to center to bring the game into extra innings.

In the tenth inning with ghost runner Gio Urshela at second, Greg Allen against Pete Fairbanks got hit by a pitch advancing to first. Aaron Judge with two on and no outs singled to left. Urshela scored. LeMahieu with men on the corners and no outs.  Fairbanks left the game replaced by Andrew Kittredge. Kittredge threw a wild pitch scoring Allen. LeMahieu ground out with Judge moving to third base. Torres hit to third to double up judge and end the inning, but the Yankees took the 2 run lead.

At the bottom with last licks on the line for the Rays, Diaz was the ghost running at second with Aroldis Chapman in for the close, Lowe struck out on a 101 mph fastball. Arozarena walked. Nelson Cruz pinch hit for Wendle. On a wild pitch, Diaz went to third and was called out. Upon review, he was called safe. Cruz then with men on second and third Cruz struck out. Mejia flew out to LeMahieu who made an on-the-gound catch to end the inning and win it for the New York Yankees.

The final score was the New York Yankees 3 and the Tampa Bay Rays 1. The winning pitcher was Chad Green and the loser, Pete Fairbanks, with the save going to Aroldis Chapman (20).
